I know studying the Bible can be intimidating and overwhelming. It doesn’t matter if you’re a new believer or a seasoned Christian.

It took me years to understand what I was reading. Maybe you’re the same – just not getting it, or you don’t know where to start.

Today, I’ll share the best tips and resources to study the Bible as a beginner. I have used these strategies over and over so I can attest it does work.

Studying the Bible is an important aspect of spiritual growth and deepening our relationship with God.

Before we begin, you’ll need to prepare yourself with these tools:

  • Your favorite bible
  • Notebook (for notes)
  • Prayer Journal
  • Pens
  • Highlighter

Practical Tips for Studying The Bible

how to study the bible for beginners

Start With the Basics

Try not to dive into complex theological concepts or tackle the entire bible at once. Instead, try to familiarize yourself with the structure and organization of the bible. You need to have a solid foundation of the word of God and understand key terms and concepts.

For instance, here are some key points or topics to build a solid foundation of the Word:

  • The Beginning
  • After the Fall
  • The Life of Jesus
  • Salvation
  • Grace and Mercy

By taking this simple approach, you’ll find out how to navigate through the scriptures and have a deeper understanding.

Starting with the basics will help build confidence and allow for a more comprehensive bible study experience.

Get Yourself A Good Study Bible

Having a hardcopy bible that I like has made studying the word of God so fun. There is a different feeling you get than if you were reading the bible from your phone.  And it doesn’t have to be King James Version!

Pick a version that is easily understandable to you. The translation that I used is NIV – it’s simple and easy to read.

When investing in a study bible, there are some things that it should contain especially if you’re serious.

Also, ensure that the bible you get can be highlighted and possibly extra space to take notes

Here are some things you should be looking for:

  • Large enough print size
  • Study notes and explanations
  • Concordance for word searches
  • Maps and charts for context
  • Cross-references to related verses
  • Detailed footnotes

Based on these tools, you can imagine your study bible might be a little heavy. But, in all seriousness, having a good study bible is a game-changer and a trusted companion.

Read For Understanding, not Speed

Forget about that 1-year bible reading plan. The Bible isn’t just a book but is God speaking to us.

It’s easy to get caught up in trying to read through as many chapters as possible or to finish a certain amount each day. However, I’ve found that rushing through the text often leads to missing out on the richness and depth of God’s word.

Taking the time to slow down, and reflect on the meaning of each passage will allow you to connect more deeply with the message and apply it to your own life. I even find myself stuck on just one verse for a long time because the revelation is so good.

Rather than just skimming the surface, prioritize understanding over speed.

Take Notes

This simple habit will change the way you study the bible. This could be jotting down insights, underlining key verses, or highlighting passages that resonate with you.

Doing this will help you engage with the Word, and apply what you read to your personal lives. Not only that, but you’ll find that you remember more of what you read.

Taking notes can be used as a future reference and allow you to track your spiritual growth. So this is where a pen and notebook will come in handy. You don’t want to miss out on those important nuggets as you study the Word of God.

Quick Bible Note-taking Tips:

  • Use keywords and phrases
  • Write down questions that come to mind
  • Highlight important passages
  • Summarize main points
  • Include personal reflections and insights
  • Keep notes organized for future reference

Ask Questions

Don’t jump over a verse you don’t understand, instead ask questions. It’s natural to encounter passages that may be challenging to understand initially. I still have this issue now and then.

Instead of feeling overwhelmed or discouraged, let’s look for answers. If you’re looking for clarification then here are some questions you need to ask.

Questions to Ask While Studying

  1. What does this verse mean?
  2. Who wrote this book?
  3. How does this apply to my life?
  4. What is the historical context?
  5. What other verses can help me understand this?
  6. What can I learn about God from this passage?

Remember you can reach out to fellow believers, and consult trusted resources or websites.

Find a Study Group or Partner

Having a study group has helped me immensely in understanding the word of God. You’ll have deep discussions and a sense of community.

Being able to share ideas, and interpretations of the word of God while supporting everyone makes studying the word fun.

This could be weekly in-person meetings, via phone or online.

Use Study Tools

Another important tip is to use study tools like concordances to help you locate specific words or verses throughout the Bible.

This is good if you come across a particular word or topic that you want to explore further for a more in-depth study. My favorites can be found online by downloading them from the Play Store apps:

Those bible study tools are enough to help you to have in-depth bible studies.

Say A Short Prayer

Start your bible study routine with a prayer to invite the presence of God. Ask for guidance and understanding of the word. When you have the mindset of developing a deeper relationship with God then reading the word becomes more easy. Sometimes I’ll play some gospel music to prepare my heart and mind.

Prayer is a channel through which we dialogue with God, by asking questions and listening. This will bring a sense of peace and trust during your study routine.

Bible Study Tips Takeaway

Apply what you learn daily

Studying the bible doesn’t end with reading but applying what you learn daily. I am a big advocate for making positive changes in one’s life.

It’s so important to put the word of God into practice. This could be showing kindness to others, practicing forgiveness, or seeking wisdom in decision-making.

The Bible provides a wealth of guidance that can positively impact your daily lives. From finance, and parenting, to marriage. By consciously applying what you learn, it will draw you closer to God.

How To Apply Word Daily

  1. Write in a journal
  2. Share with a friend
  3. Pray about it
  4. Apply to real-life situations
  5. Meditate and Visualize
  6. Practice through daily actions

Bonus: Listen to Reputable Sermons

Listening to sermons can be a valuable tool in studying the word of God. The spoken word has a unique power to captivate and inspire us. Making it an effective means of learning and retaining information.

Through sermons, you can gain a deeper understanding of biblical teachings and principles. You can listen to sermons while driving, doing chores, or when you just don’t have the time.

Additionally, sermons often provide practical applications and real-life examples of how to live out the word of God, making it easier to internalize and apply these teachings in our daily lives.

Bonus: Use Books or Devotionals

If you ever take up the Bible and don’t know where to start. Then you can use devotional or Christian books to help you.

Books and devotionals are powerful resources that can aid in the study of the word of God. Using these materials makes studying the bible easier.

Most times, the author has already fully researched the topics. This helps you develop a deeper understanding of the word.

The YouVersion Bible does have many devotions and bible apps that are FREE to access.
